About Flickr
Flickr is one of the oldest photo sharing sites on the web, launched in 2004 and now owned by SmugMug, which bought it from Yahoo in 2018. It is aimed at photographers rather than quick screenshot sharing: photos sit in a profile with albums, groups, comments, EXIF details and a choice of licences, including Creative Commons.
A free account can store up to 1,000 photos and videos in total. Flickr Pro removes that cap with unlimited full-resolution storage, removes ads for you and your visitors, and adds detailed statistics and priority support. Pro is sold as monthly, annual and two-year subscriptions that renew automatically.
Flickr has a long-standing public API, which is free for non-commercial use.
How to upload to Flickr
- Sign in or create a Flickr account (an account is required to upload).
- Click the upload icon, then drag in photos or videos, or choose them from your device.
- Add titles, tags, albums, privacy and licence settings, then click Upload.
The Flickr mobile app can also upload directly from your phone.
Things to know
- The 1,000 item cap: The limit was introduced in 2019. Before then free accounts had 1 TB of storage. Accounts over the cap cannot upload and may have excess items deleted, oldest first.
- Format limits: RAW files are not supported, HEIF/HEIC uploads only work through the Flickr app, and very wide panoramas (more than 31.25 times wider than tall) are rejected.
- Video: Videos of any length can be uploaded, but playback is limited to the first 3 minutes on free accounts and 10 minutes on Pro.
- Safety levels: Uploaders set a safety level for their content, and restricted-level videos are not permitted.
- Not a screenshot host: Flickr works best for photography portfolios and communities. For quick image links, a simpler host may suit you better.
