About Rentry
Rentry is a Markdown pastebin and lightweight publishing service at rentry.co. It has been online since 2017 and suits guides, link lists and other pages that benefit from formatting rather than plain text.
Entries are written in Markdown with a live preview. Beyond standard Markdown, Rentry supports extras such as automatic tables of contents, admonition boxes (info, note, warning and danger), coloured and highlighted text, spoilers, text alignment and floating, resizable images.
Each entry can have a custom URL in the form rentry.co/yourname, or a random one. Instead of accounts, Rentry uses an edit code that lets you edit, rename or delete the entry. A separate modify code can be shared with others to allow text changes only. Rentry says it will always be free, and it accepts donations.
How to create a paste
- Go to rentry.co and write or paste your Markdown. Use the preview tab to check the formatting.
- Optionally set a custom URL and your own edit code. If you leave them blank, both are generated for you.
- Select Go (or press Ctrl+Enter) and keep a note of the edit code.
The official Python client can create entries from the command line:
rentry new 'Some *markdown* text'
rentry edit -p your-edit-code -u your-url 'Updated text'
Things to know
- Not private: anyone with the URL can read an entry, so do not use it for sensitive information.
- Edit codes: they must not be easy to guess or contain the page URL. After three wrong attempts, a page locks for one hour.
- Raw access: fetching raw Markdown through the API is closed by default and needs an access code issued by Rentry's admins.
- API: creation through the API is rate limited for anonymous use.
- Content rules: entries that break Rentry's rules may be deleted.
- Images: images are added with Markdown image syntax pointing to an image URL. Rentry notes that resizing an image only changes how it displays, not its file size.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to use Rentry?
No. You create an entry without signing up. To edit or delete it later you use the edit code you chose, or the random one Rentry generated, when you created it.
What happens if I lose my edit code?
You lose the ability to edit, rename or delete the entry. Rentry mentions verification by email or through its Verify Guide as a possible route back.
How long do Rentry pages last?
Rentry says entries are kept forever unless they break its rules or you delete them. Common-word URLs that are not in use may be reassigned, but pages with genuine content edited in the last 12 months are kept.
